He’s known for showcasing the island’s properties, but this month it’s Simon Torode’s own photography that we’re putting in the spotlight.
Inspired by his travels all over the world, Simon’s photos capture fleeting moments in time that linger with the viewer for much longer. From a small boy in a boxing ring to an old woman’s suspicious glance – these pictures tell a story we want to know more of.
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
I’m Simon Torode. I always stumble when people ask me ‘what I do’ as this could be many things. Most people will know me as the founder of Livingroom Estate Agents but in 2015 I have also founded a brand consultancy and will shortly be launching my biggest challenge to date – an international e-commerce website.
WHERE DID YOU STUDY?
Educated in Guernsey I then left the island to complete a Foundation in Art & Design at Winchester School of Art followed by a BA Hons in Graphic Design from University of the West of England, Bristol.
NAME THREE PHOTOGRAPHERS YOU’D LIKE TO BE COMPARED TO?
That is a very hard question to answer, I do what I do and hope people like it but could never dream of putting myself in the same category as those who truly inspire me. If I were to pick three photographers who captivate me, then it would have to be Henri Cartier-Bresson, Mario Testino and Peter Lik. I was lucky enough to meet Peter Lik in Australia long before he was as famous as he is now. I purchased one of his first images from his then humble gallery in Cairns and every time I look at it, it reminds me just how much of a journey life can be if you believe in what you do.
WHAT HAS BEEN A SEMINAL EXPERIENCE?
I think the biggest seminal experience I have had was from my school days at Les Beaucamps. I was never an academic and struggled with certain subjects and the formality of their teaching methods. My art teacher, the late Dave Fuller taught me that a creative mind can be as valuable as that of an academic. This has helped me more than he ever would have known. An amazing man.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE PHOTOGRAPHY?
I think if you are a natural creative, have a keen eye for detail and love gadgets, then photography is a perfect medium for anyone to explore. I haven’t chosen it specifically and use it as part of a much larger picture – both in and out of work.
WHAT WORK DO YOU MOST ENJOYING DOING?
I enjoy taking photographs of people when they are unaware of me doing so. I am not very keen on overtly posed portraiture and believe you get much more from an image when the subject is wholly natural. I enjoy trying to capture the essence of an object or situation rather than displaying the obvious.
WHAT THEMES DO YOU PURSUE?
Travel photography, photojournalism and street art.
WHAT’S YOUR STRONGEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?
Is it just me or were the summers much hotter back then?! I fondly remember long summers on L’Eree beach and fantastic days on Herm.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?
To never see a winter and explore the globe with my nearest and dearest – discovering something new every day (in the sun!).
